From Screen to Skin

‘Once we had a field of vision, now we have Windows! Horizons have become frames, the world a screen.’

This page contains my research on the screen; How it now shapes the world we live in and its use as a discursive metaphor and psychological perceptive tool. This page is really to understand the subjectfor myself. It is not written with a third party reader in mind and is not really intended for public consumption but If you are not me please comment and give your views or contact me if you have some information that may be useful.

I have been reading alot over the past couple of years about screens and windows and frames and how these architectural forms have come to be the dominant metaphor in how we both perceive and conceive the world around us. From Alberti to Eisenstein, from LeCorbusier to Bill Gates, Paul Valery, Virilio, Baudrillard, Deleuze, Derrida the discussion of the screen, the concept of framing and more importantly the discussion of ‘interface’ is becoming an ever more prescient issue. As a sculptor I have a keen interest in perception, the point of view of the spectator and the surfaces to be seen. Having researched so much I feel now I need to ‘frame’ this information and see how it informs my own work and to lay out some of my own ideas on this area.
